Grammys

After the Emmys, the Grammys are onto it as well. That is, the new Grammy.com is using Drupal — and Pressflow to be specific. The Grammy Awards, or Grammys, are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievements in the music industry. Cool!

NVidia

NVidia recently launched their new Tegra developer community on Drupal. See nvidia . NVidia came to Acquia to help them get the site built. Development was done by Chapter Three (an Acquia partner) and Wiredcraft, while Acquia hosts the site on the Acquia Hosting platform and provides 24×7 monitoring and support. They are also using Mollom to protect their site against spammers.

VT4 using Drupal

Flemish commercial television channel VT4 is using Drupal on vt4.be . VT4 is part of ProSiebenSat.1 Media, the second-largest broadcasting group in Europe. Cool!

Ashley Tisdale

Emmys

Glamour, glitter, and champagne all around because Drupal has gone Hollywood. The Emmys website has just switched to Drupal in preparation for the announcement of nominees tomorrow, and the subsequent annual Emmy award ceremony later this year. The Emmys are annual awards to outstanding television programs and performers.

Emmys.com was previously a static HTML website, with a few custom PHP components. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (the parent organization) migrated to Drupal largely because of the positive experiences various Academy members and other industry leaders have had with using Drupal.

The new Emmys.com is a joint project of volunteers from the Academy’s television industry leadership, its staff, and Emmy magazine — they built the site with the help of Metal Toad Media. In addition to migrating their main website, emmys.com, they’re also in the progress of converting some of their other related properties.

Battlefield

Battlefield 1943 is out and the website is using Drupal: see battlefield1943.com.

Francesca Battistelli

Francesca Battistelli is using Drupal for her official website at francescamusic.com . The site is built by her record label Warner Bros Records (also a Drupal site), and is one of the best looking artist sites that I have seen. Nice!

Robbie Williams

Robbie Williams made his comeback on British television music talent show The X Factor, where he performed his new single “Bodies” for the first time live. With his comeback also comes a website refresh using Drupal.

Fujifilm

The Japanese Fujifilm, with more than 75,000 employees the world’s largest photographic and imaging company, is using Drupal for a community site at http://www.myfinepix.com. It is a website where FinePix camera owners come together to share images, knowledge and inspiration. The site features galleries, forums, photoblogs, news, competitions, user profiles and much more. A good showcase for some of Drupal’s social media features.

Russian Forbes magazine

The website of the Russian Forbes magazine was recently redesigned using Drupal

AT&T

AT&T, the largest provider of local long distance telephone services in the United States, is using Drupal on for an add-on site called AT&T Apps Beta.

The website requires you to log in so there isn’t much to explore without creating an account. Either way, AT&T Apps Beta is a platform for connecting highly involved AT&T customers with access to the latest and greatest mobile applications.

Can you see a pattern here? Another large organization using Drupal to build an add-on site. Once an organization has its feet wet with Drupal after implementing a couple of micro- or add-on sites, you start to see Drupal bubble to the top of the organization or to larger and larger web properties. Either way, it is great to see one of the largest technology companies use Drupal.

Zappos

Long term Drupal developer Jeff Eaton continues to inspire and as a result, Zappos started using Drupal on zappos.com . Zappos.com is an e-commerce website with more than $1 billion in revenue, and well known for their legendary customer service and culture.

King of Belgium goes Drupal

British Government using Drupal

The British Government is using Drupal on an innovation initiative to encourage developers and designers share new ideas and showcase their work: see http://innovate.direct.gov.uk. Directgov’s main site, direct.gov.uk is the official government website for citizens. It provides information and services from across government organizations.

Big, exciting news! The flag ship website of the U.S. government, Whitehouse.gov, just relaunched on Drupal. This is a big day for Drupal, and for Open Source in government, and something all of us in the community should be very proud of.

usaspending.gov using Drupal

Vivek Kundra, the CIO of the United States, unveiled the new IT spending dashboards at usaspending.gov earlier this week. Tim O’Reilly has all the details in his blog post titled Radical transparency: the new federal IT dashboard. In short, the dashboards are designed to help CIOs of individual government agencies get a handle on the effectiveness of government IT spending. The site was built with Drupal.

This is a fundamental change in the way government is going to be run, and it is great to see Drupal play a small role in that. Great stuff!

Dutch government using Drupal

The Dutch government is using Drupal for the website of the State Service for Cultural Heritage. The site was built by Cinnamon.

French government portal using Drupal

After the French Ministry for Health, Youth and Sport using Drupal started using, the French government switched its official government portal to Drupal! Check it out at gouvernement.fr.
The site was built by the French Government Multimedia Team and Adyax Experts (an Acquia partner). About 10 persons worked on it for several months. Most of the work was spent on building custom migration tools to switch from SPIP Agora to Drupal.

New York State Senate using Drupal

More proof that Drupal and open government is a great match: the New York State Senate just relaunched its website on Drupal and there is a lot to like. Check out their new site at nysenate.gov.

Obama using Drupal

Drupal is no stranger to the political arena, and has been used for many campaign and government sites before. Recovery.gov, though, is a definite coup for Drupal — there are not many Drupal sites that have their own post on Whitehouse.gov. Or on the Huffington Post. Or is featured on CNN all day long. Or has its own YouTube promo by the US President. Unbelievable!

Drupal Modules

A Drupal module is simply a collection of files containing a set of routines written in PHP. Because the module code executes within the context of the site, it can use all the functions and access all variables and structures of the main engine. In fact, a module is no different from a regular PHP file: it is more of a concept that encourages good design principles and a good development model. Modularity also suits the open-source development model, because it allows a number of developers to contribute functionality to Drupal without risk of interference.

These Modules provide a great power to Drupal. A huge collection of modules are available. Each developer has its own collection of modules. Some time we select some modules as our requirement.

Now this 10 modules are the most basic and common modules mostly required at the start.
If you are novice that I would suggest you to start with these modules so that you can select proper module to begin with and not getting into “What to do and What to select” phrase.

1. Administration menu

I Love this module because it increases work efficiency. If you are lazy person you will love it. I suggest when you start drupal you can start with this.

Administration menu module provides a theme-independent administration interface (aka. navigation, back-end) for Drupal. It’s a helper for novice Drupal users coming from other CMS, a real time-saver for Drupal site administrators, and definitely a must for Drupal developers and site buiwlders (keyord: Devgel interation).

The module renders all administrative menu items below ‘administer’ in a clean, attractive and purely CSS-based menu at the top of your website. It contains not only regular menu items – local tasks are also included, giving you extremely fast access to any administrative resource and function your Drupal installation provides.

2. Content Construction Kit (CCK)

The Content Construction Kit allows you to add custom fields to nodes using a web browser. It requires View module

2. Create new custom content types

“However, there is one area where realistically, only a module will do. We all have them. It’s client that comes back wanting more and more features as their site grows (and are prepared to pay for it!). An example, custom searching. If you know your own module inside out then extending it and adding extra functionality is a breeze. With a CCK+ Views deployment you have to start getting into the db construct for the site. If you want it generic across sites, you have a lot of settings admin work to do, or hard code it for that site. Either way, it’s sometimes a lot of work to retrofit custom work over CCK+ Views”

3. Views

The Views module provides a flexible method for Drupal site designers to control how lists and tables of content (nodes in Views 1, almost anything in Views 2) are presented. Traditionally, Drupal has hard-coded most of this, particularly in how taxonomy and tracker lists are formatted.

This tool is essentially a smart query builder that, given enough information, can build the proper query, execute it, and display the results. It has four modes, plus a special mode, and provides an impressive amount of functionality from these modes.

Among other things, Views can be used to generate reports, create summaries, and display collections of images and other content.

4. Pathauto

The Pathauto module automatically generates path aliases for various kinds of content (nodes, categories, users) without requiring the user to manually specify the path alias. This allows you to get aliases like /category/my-node-title.html instead of /node/123. The aliases are based upon a “pattern” system which the administrator can control.

5. Token

Token provides an API that allows other modules to tap into variable bits of text (user names, node titles, taxonomy terms, etc). The Token module provides a central API for modules to use these tokens, and expose their own token values.

A suite of modules containing fun for module developers and themers.

7. Panels

The Panels module allows a site administrator to create customized layouts for multiple uses. At its core it is a drag and drop content manager that lets you visually design a layout and place content within that layout. Integration with other systems allows you to create nodes that use this, landing pages that use this, and even override system pages such as taxonomy and the node page so that you can customize the layout of your site with very fine grained permissions.

8. FileField

FileField provides a universal file upload field for CCK. It is a robust alternative to core’s Upload module and an absolute must for users uploading a large number of files. Great for managing video and audio files for podcasts on your own site.

9. Poormanscron

A module which runs the Drupal cron operations without needing the cron application.

For every page view, this module checks to see if the last cron run was more than 1 hour ago (this period is configurable). If so, the cron hooks are executed, and Drupal is happy. These cron hooks fire after all HTML is returned to the browser, so the user who kicks off the cron jobs should not notice any delay.

10. Date

This package contains both the Date module and a Date API module. The Date API is available to be used by other modules and is not dependent on having CCK installed.

The date module is a flexible date/time field type for the cck content module which requires the CCK content.module and the Date API module.

date.module can store dates in two ways, as an iso date (YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS) or a unix timestamp.
multiple widgets are available for date input – a drop-down selector, a javascript pop-up, and plain text that accepts ISO format or anything strtotime allows
Create dates with a single input element, or add a second date input element to create ‘From’ and ‘To’ dates.
Use the Views Calendar to display CCK dates in calendars.
Use the included Date Browser Views plugin to add flexible date-based grouping and paging to any View that uses a CCK date field as an argument.
